Archives

Over the last two hundred and sixty years the British Province of the Moravian Church has accumulated a considerable archival collection, consisting of approximately four hundred boxes of material, as well as a library of around 3800 printed books, which is now housed in Moravian Church House in London.

Holdings
The archival material consists of: records relating to certain congregations, particularly those that are no longer active; mission records, including material relating to the Society for the Furtherance of the Gospel (SFG); Synod minutes and resolutions, and records of the administrative bodies of the Province, the Moravian Union and Unitas Estates.
The library contains printed books relating to the history of the Church, both in Britain and abroad, biographies, Moravian hymn and tune books and theology. There are also a number of periodicals published by Provinces from all over the world.

Using The Archive
Entry to use the archive is free, although an appointment should be made in advance with the archivist, at the above address, by either telephone, fax or e-mail. Any donations to the upkeep of the archive will be greatly appreciated.

Where To Find The Archive
The archive is situated at Moravian Church House in Muswell Hill, North London and is accessible by public transport.
From London main-line stations take the Underground to Finsbury Park (on the Victoria and Piccadilly Lines). Then, from Wells Terrace outside the station, take either the W3 or W7 bus to the bottom of Muswell Hill.

Opening Hours
The archive is open on Mondays and Tuesdays between 10.00 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. Other days (excluding weekends) may be available upon request to the archivist. Where possible, readers should order material in advance.

Research Service
Although the archivist will answer brief enquiries free of charge, time constraints mean that research which takes more than half an hour cannot be undertaken.

Photocopying
The photocopying of material held in the archive is allowed where copyright and the condition of the material permits.
All photocopying is at the discretion of the archivist. Due to the possibility of damage during the process, the photocopying of printed books and bound material is not allowed.

Charges for photocopies of original documents are as follows:

Microfilming
The archive does not have microfilming facilities. In certain circumstances it may be possible to get material filmed. Enquiries regarding this should be made to the archivist.

Photography
Although the archive has no conventional photographic facilities, it can provide digital photographs at a cost of £5 for each picture.
The photographing of individual documents by readers is also permitted at the discretion of the archivist and where copyright permits. There is no charge for this, but a copy of any photographs taken must be donated to the archive in return.

Reproduction
Permission of the Moravian Church must be obtained before reproducing copies of original documents and illustrations from the archive and library. A small fee may be imposed.
