The Moravian Church, Royton

formerly Westwood Church, Middleton Road, Oldham (1865)

Spring Garden Street, Royton, Oldham OL2 5RR

The original Westwood Moravian Church was officially opened in October 1865 and just four years later was replaced by a larger and more permanent building. The Church History published for Westwood’s centenary records that in 1881 the Lancashire District Conference asked Westwood to consider opening a preaching station. Nearby Royton was considered, although in the end no station was opened.

126 years later, Royton is the new home of the congregation following the closure and sale of the Westwood property in July 2005. The congregation have moved to the former Salvation Army building in Royton which has been renovated and turned into a modern multi-purpose building. The first service in the new building was held on 1st April 2007.

There is plenty going on. As well as the 11am Sunday morning services there are weekly coffee mornings and a monthly MWA group. The fellowship and bible study group, and social and fundraising events are yet to restart but will soon be part of the activities. The congregation are also becoming involved in the Royton churches together group.

These are exciting times in the life of the congregation as it begins to work out the possibilities for serving God and loving people not far from a busy town centre. There is a definite buzz around the place.
