Children and Youth Festival at Fellowship Day 2011
Seven children and young people joined four leaders for a day of activity and fun. The morning started with a short prayer and song then we went outside into the lovely sunshine to play some games. The theme of the day was ‘Reignite’ so all the games were based of fire and flames.
We then returned to the hall we had for the Godly Play presentation ‘The Mystery of Pentecost’ which looks at both the tower of Babel and Pentecost. Reflections of the stories were followed by an opportunity to make something. Fires and towers were a definite theme for this. Preparation of a drama for the final closing worship was squeezed in before lunch.

After lunch we moved outside again as we prepared for our fire workshop by making sand trays. This involved lots of hammering and noise – no broken thumbs or fingers fortunately. For some this was the first time they had used a hammer. A safety briefing and a gathering of safety equipment (buckets of water, fire extinguisher etc) happened next before the children started to pay with fire. Structures were built from flammable material, then sprayed with paraffin and placed on the sand trays before being set alight. This was great fun and everyone involved enjoyed seeing their construction slowly disappear under the flame. I think the leaders enjoyed it as much as the children!
Amazingly then it was time to join the adults for the closing worship and go home.
