Fetter Lane Moravian Church, London - Dec 2025
Men’s Fellowship Event
On Sunday the 12th of October the Men’s Fellowship group of the Fetter Lane congregation held a special meeting. Our aim was to celebrate the life and work of Jan Amos Kominsky (Comenius) the Czech educationalist. Born in 1592 Comenius became known as ‘The Great Educator’ and is considered by many to be the father of modern didactics – he was also Bishop of the Unity of Brethren as well as a philosopher and refugee, displaced from his homeland by war and persecution.
Our meeting had two parts; first our group spent an hour considering the life, history and principles of universal education that Comenius espoused. Then thinking on the restless nature of Comenius’ life a few of us travelled to the Queens Arms pub in Battersea where they serve a fine Czech lager from the Bohem Brewery named after him: a walk of about two and a half miles. On this occasion only a couple of us made it as far as the pub but we hope to make this a regular occurrence in recognition of an influential and truly interesting figure historically linked with our church community. At the pub we enjoyed a few pints of Amos beer and some traditional grilled sausage with mustard, horseradish, bread and pickles. We look forward to running this event regularly in the future and if you would like to join us next time please get in touch.
